Michael Chen

Michael Chen joined Hartwell Family Law in 2015 after serving as a family court mediator for the 2nd Judicial District. His experience on both sides of the courtroom gives him invaluable insight into how judges think and what factors most influence custody and property decisions.

Michael is passionate about helping families find resolution without the emotional and financial toll of traditional litigation. He has completed extensive training in collaborative divorce through the International Academy of Collaborative Professionals and is a certified mediator through the Colorado Mediation Association.

However, Michael never hesitates to take a case to trial when collaboration isn't possible. He has successfully litigated hundreds of custody disputes and understands that some situations require a more aggressive approach.

Before law school, Michael worked as a family therapist, giving him unique insight into the psychological aspects of divorce and custody disputes. This background helps him anticipate how family dynamics will play out in court and how to present cases most effectively.

Michael lives in Wash Park with his wife Jessica and their rescue dog. He's an avid skier and enjoys hiking Colorado's fourteeners.
